Stromal Endometriosis

Abstract

|
Stromal endometriosis is a benign uterine neoplasm in its clinical and histologic manifestation. However, sometimes malignant forms, such as sarcomatous change with infiltrative growth and distant metastasis may be encountered. Because of rarity of this neoplasm, little attention was paied for its histogenesis. A case of stromal endometriosis was seen in a 56years old multipara. Polypoid masses in the endometrial cavity with whorl-like appearance of the cut surface suggested endometriosis.
Histologically islet-like proliferation of endometrial stroma in the myometrium is noted. Mitosis as well as cellular atypicality and nuclear hyperchromatism are frequently seen. However, no infiltrative growth or distant metastasis is detectable. It is suggested that this neoplasm is histologically malignant, but clinically benign in its nature.
